Hi Nick,
True, very amazing sight to see - a lucky day! We had regular sightings of these bitterns for about a week, however they are once again proving to be their elusive selves. The area where we observed them has been a known area here for bitterns here for at least twelve years. Early morning trips are ideal, we have yet to see them later in the day. We are happy to accommodate keen early starters for trips from 7 AM - beautiful time of day!

Seeing three Bitterns is a really amazing sight in NZ, and something any overseas birder (and many NZ ones) must have been completely rapt about seeing. Are such sightings routine on your early-in-the-day trips?
